Lough Foyle Yacht Club

Very windy day blowing Southerly. Multiple capsize actions from Danny G and Dermot M and Bill J. The phantoms were a handful at all Jibe manouvers of which there were more than usual because of a dog leg shaped course sailing in the bays on both sides of culmore point. Many thanks to the rescue boat team, Roy L and others who were kept busy. Anthony G/Todd and Anton H  had a great little mini race for the line in Race 1.

F2+ from south. Beat to quay, run up to lower marks and reach across. beat home, wind dropping all the while. George G and Bill J are on final warning for going inside oyster bed marks,( that is the yell/green marks) this was kindly pointed out by Danny G who was sailing close by.



A very nice sunny day blowing northerly f2/3. 11 boats sailing on first day of season. Congratulations to Bill J launched his new GP14. James H Jnr did very well in the club Laser. Danny G and Ken L were over the line in race two and DSQ. Anthony G broke his tiller and was forced to RTD. Nice to see Mark McC and Owen McC back in their boat.

Saturday October 16th

Clear bright day, very light E wind all afternoon until end of second race when it dropped off almost entirely. Close racing especially race 2.

Course: beat to upper faughan, over to upper conneyburrow mark, then around 2 mark near culmore point. Twice round race 1, once for race 2.

Last race of the season. A good breeze F3+ SSE. very strong ebb tides. We raced up to the old jetty, fahan, conniborrow and round a mark near the perch. The reach from fahan to conniborrow was across the tide and quete dramatic with water rushing under the boat from bow and beam.

Many thanks to George D for the hot toddy’s. An excellent way to finish of a busy sailing season. Nice to see a few visitors in from the Swilly. Maybe they will come for a wee race next year. 🙂

A fine day with nice winds to start. We raced a long course to conniborrow, fahan, coolkeeragh, harts, culmore bay, home. Wind dropped to very light.

Meanwhile in Larne several Culmore GP14s made the jouney and raced for the weekend. Congratulations to Keith and Dessie on the race victory at Larne. The first of many to come!

Racing today was cancelled it was too windy.

A few people hung around to do some work on boats, then the wind died then Anton H and Dermot M went out on the Phantoms for a blast. A great sailing day was had, with some great fast reaching.

Congratulations to the ladies rowing team. They completed another sponsored row from Prehen to Culmore in difficult conditions.

Very windy squally conditions dropped to nothing then picked up again. Many thanks to George G for OD duties and working the rescue boat. Very close racing between Gallaghers and Lynchs at the top of the fleet, just seconds in it on the second race.

A warm welcome is extended to potential new members Paul Beardmore in his Wayfarer and to Ronan Magee and his wife.
Paul in his Wayfarer has been awarded a handicap of 1190. Ronan went out on a laser and was awarded a starting handicap of 1232.

We have a plan (conditions permitting) to race the Foyle Festival cup downriver near the lower marks. there will be a flagship start. This will mean that we will leave Culmore at 2.30 allowing half an hour to sail down for a 3.00pm start. It would be great to see a big fleet. Visitors welcome.

So much for the advert

Sadly conditions did not permit…in fact saturdays weather could reasonably be described as horrible for sailing. Lots of rain and very little wind. Eventually three boats went out with the following results.
