Derry lads take out Museum Drontheim

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Four young sailors from LFYC took out the McDonald boat belonging to the Moville Martitime Museum to race in the Greencastle Regatta last sunday.

They sailed the big Drontheim very well showing that the sailing skills from the past are being passed along. Old meets new?

Punt Regatta

Monday, July 30th, 2012

I don’t have the results here for this race. Kevin L took over as skipper in James H’s Punt his debut as a Punt skipper. (James H was away at work). Anton and Jack H were crew, Anton H second time in a Punt and Jack H’s debut. It was a windy day with sailing in Culmore bay. The novice crew did well getting ahead in the early stages of both races but being reeled in by the old hands before the end. In the second race Jack H was pretty busy bailing as a big gulp of water came on board.

A great day out.

A great day out with all ten Clipper skippers and many crews arriving at Culmore point and over 100 members of general public. The bookie did well. We were pleased to see Sir Robin Knox Johnson who went out for spin in James Hockley’s Punt and was a great company on shore. The results were calculated over two races:

1st Edinburgh Inspiring Capital with Danny Gallagher

2nd Singapore with Danny McDonald

3rd Australia Gold Coast with James Hockley

Lough Foyle Punts being made in Derry

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Lough Foyle Punts are made in Derry by Ken Doherty (featured here) and in Moville by the McDonalds. A number of other makers have also made excellent boats.

The design of the Punt is hundreds of years old and preserved in these FORMS guides…

and the tools and and the methods of construction have changed not very much…

Its a skilled process with a lot of by eye judgement…

made by hand, yes but extremely accurately made. Ken D also made this rather nice scale model of the Punt. I wonder will he bring it along to the Clipper Punt Race for people to see….I must ask him…
