Culmore Regatta: Junior Helms race

Friday, August 20th, 2010

The Junior Helms (Under 18) race on Thur 19/08/2010 was a great success with 8 boats (3 420’s, 4 GP14’s and one single handed Pico).

A few nerves been tested here at the Skippers briefing

The start line was a tight fit to the shore. There were two races with some great start line action. From the shore line the competitors could be clearly heard giving eachother friendly advice.

Thanks to Lauren Harrigan for the photos. There are loads more on the LFYC Facebook Group.

Tuesday September 21st
7pm Clipper Crew Recruitment Presentation – City Hotel

The Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race is the only
global event raced by people like YOU! An exciting new
route has been unveiled and after racing from the UK to
Brazil, South Africa and Australia, the fleet head to New
Zealand for the first time. After that, it’s on to Singapore,
China, California, Panama, New York, Canada, Northern
Ireland before heading to the finish. At 40,000 miles, Clipper
11-12 will be the world’s longest round the world yacht race
and delivers the challenge of a lifetime for those bold enough
to take part. The 10 strong Clipper Round the World Race
fleet are sponsored by cities, regions and countries and
Derry-Londonderry will be fielding an entry for the first time.
The race will be coming to Derry-Londonderry in July 2012
on the homeward leg and could it be you be on board, doing
Northern Ireland proud, when they arrive?

The Clipper Race is the only place you’ll find stockbrokers
and housewives racing against taxi drivers, engineers,
farmers, students and chief execs. And if you have
never sailed before, don’t worry. Before the start of the
adventure, 40% of the crew were complete novices and a
comprehensive training programme is mandatory for all
those who participate.
The Clipper Recruitment team is coming to Derry-Londonderry
and would love to see you at one of our no obligation
presentations. We’ll show you some awesome video
footage, tell you more about life on board and highlight the
incredible sense of achievement that racing around the
planet at its most raw, can bring.

Culmore Regatta 2010

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

The Fort and the club grounds were looking great.

The Culmore Regatta 2010 was a great success. The event started with Junior Helms race on Thursday (19/08/2010) night. 8 boats raced with a very exciting start line action. There is a full report here:

Foyle Punt races

The Punt race of Friday night for the Billy Doherty Cup was postponed untill saturday due to very heavy winds.

Saturday morning was bright but windy. Racing was slightly delayed with 10 Foyle Punts racing. Derry City Mayor Colum Eastwood started the fisrt race in a F4/5 breeze. One Punt went over on the start line. Close racing followed. The Mayor was surprised how tippy Punts are for Traditional boats and how much skill is required to pilot them.

10 Foyle Punts raced. Crew ages ranged from James L at 13 years to Willie H at 85 years.

Start of the first race, bright with a F3/F4. A very strong squall developed later on.
